| It is fitting that the new home of The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet has used quality Australian stone. This landmark five storey building is clad in light golden brown Donnybrook Sandstone from Western Australia. The façade includes the extensive use of glass giving it a sense of light and space both inside and out. The distinct vertical cladding of sandstone produces a colonnade effect; this gives the building a sense of permanence and stateliness appropriate for such an important national building. The central portion is clad in Darwin Brown granite which forms a massive cubic centrepiece that connects the two wings and embodies the permanence of stone. | ![]() |

Stone Initiatives was commissioned to carry out a fitness for purpose evaluation of the Donnybrook Sandstone and Darwin Brown granite. The evaluation also included assessment of the production and processing facility for the sandstone and development of an effective and practical quality control program for use throughout the project. |
